National day was here at last. It was Fatima's job to make a special gift for everyone. It was her family tradition.

Grandma Meera loves plants. Fatima made her Grandma a flower pot, then she put it in a red box.

Grandpa Khalid loves cookies. Fatima made her Grandpa cookies, then she put them in a green box.

Fatima's Cousin, Hamad, loves camels. So Fatima wrote a story about a Camel. Then, she put it in a black box.

Fatima's Uncle Yasser collected coins. Fatima made her Uncle a large coin out of clay, and then put it in a white box.

Fatima didn't know what to make for Aunt Hamda! She didn't know what was special for her Aunt. Fatima had to look for clues.

First, Fatima saw that Aunt Hamda had a baseball keychain.

Then, she noticed that Aunt Hamda's socks had small baseballs on them.

Next, Fatima saw Aunt Hamda watching baseball on TV. Fatima knew just what to do.

At last, it was time for Fatima to give her gifts. Each person smiled when they opened the gift made just for them.

Aunt Hamda jumped up when she took hers out of the box. "Let's play ball!" she called.

Then she led the family outside holding her baseball and bat. The family played baseball late into the holiday  night.

The Strange Star

Rosie loved watching the night sky. It shined with so many stars.

Sometimes, she would climb onto Papa’s shoulders.  She’d feel like a princess, sitting closer to those stars.

One afternoon, Papa said, “We’re going to the beach!  Won’t that be fun?”

Rosie wasn’t sure. “Will my stars be there, too?”

“Maybe,” Papa said.

So they went to the beach. But it was foggy that night – no stars in sight.  “Let’s see what happens tomorrow,” Papa said.

“Okay…” Rosie frowned.

The next morning, they went back to the beach and Rosie gathered seashells.  Rosie found something strange. It looked like a big, orange, bumpy star. Had it fallen from the sky? And why wasn’t it glowing?

“It’s not a star.” Papa smiled. “It’s a starfish. It lives in the ocean.”

Rosie put the starfish in the ocean. They watched the waves wash it back home.  Then Rosie looked for more starfish. She liked stars AND starfish.
